The Good Geeks Do

Geeks are awesome.  I say that all the time, but while attending Gen Con last month, I was reminded of this by Gen Con's partnership with a local charity.  All of the proceeds from the special events during Gen Con 2013 went to the Big Brother Big Sister of Central Indiana.  And this isn’t an uncommon connection at comic and gaming cons. GrandCon in Grand Rapids, Michigan has a charitable partner in the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation.  Our convention spotlight, Project Comic Con has partnered with Stray Rescue of St. Louis.

For anyone in the Chicago area, the Chicagoland Browncoats sponsor an annual charity showing of the Joss Whedon film, Serenity.  This year’s Can’t Stop the Serenity charity screening will be September 14th at the Genesee Theater in Waukegan, IL.  The event includes a silent and live auction, a costume contest, and the move screening. And admit it, just seeing it again on the big screen is pretty awesome. So why not help out a good cause while basking in Whedon bliss? All proceeds of the event will go to Equality Now and House of the  Good Shepherd.

So feel good about yourself when you’re spending money at your local con.  Much of time you are helping to spread the good around.

Upcoming Con Spotlight
Project Comic Con - St. Louis, MO September 21 - 22

Project Comic Con is a comic convention for comic lovers. What? No really. As many comic cons have evolved into pop-culture cons, Project Comic Con has remained focused on comics and comic book lovers.

The guest list is impressive.  George Perez, Fabian Nicieza, Phil Jimenez, Scott Lobdell, Kenneth Rocafort, and Phil Hester are headliners, but there are other incredible guests in both comics and cosplay. They also have a great lineup in artist alley.  Project Comic Con has a variety of events during the con, including a costume contest and  sketch jam.

So if you need to get your Comic Con on old school, don’t miss this one.

Mainstream Geek

The opportunity to mix my seriously geeky side with the mundane muggles of the world is always appreciated. So when I discovereda place that allows us to exist in harmony and celebrate one of my passions at the same time…..Bazinga!  The Emporium Arcade Bar in Chicago is just such a place.

On a recent trip to the Windy City, we stopped by the bar to check it out.  They have 24 beers on tap and over 50 whiskeys and bourbons. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about their drink selections.  And that’s not even the most awesome part! They have 2 huge rooms filled with classic arcade games.  Joust, Galaga, Space Invaders, Burger Time, Asteroids and Q*bert are lined around the rooms. I was able to enjoy a Smuttynose Porter while I played Tapper. It was either harder than I remembered or I am less dexterous than I once was.  Or maybe it was the Smuttynose.  Who can tell?  But it was pretty cool that the bar was lined with classic video game enthusiasts while 2 different bachelorette parties celebrated.  It is a beautiful things when worlds collide.

Check out the blog post of our Chicago trip. The Emporium Arcade Bar is located at 1366 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago, IL.
