Chicago has become a terrific source of geeky con activity over the past few years. With the addition of C2E2 four years ago and the continued presence of Wizard World, the city plays host to two large and exciting pop-culture conventions. But the city also has a great variety of smaller, more intimate cons that span the geek spectrum.
Adepticon - April 2014 - this con is a gathering of miniature wargaming enthusiasts from across the globe. This con offers huge gaming opportunities, as well as a great vendor hall. Admission is free for those that just want to watch the action. This event is held at the Westin Yorktown Center in Lombard.
C2E2 - April 2014 -Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo is an excellent pop-culture convention that brings in top names from the world of comics, television, movies and art. The event is held in April at McCormick Place.
CAKE - May 2014 - The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo is dedicated to independent comics. They feature comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions and panel discussions. The weekend event is held at the Center on Halsted in Chicago.
Anime Central - May 2014 is Chicago's largest anime, manga and Japanese pop culture event. This con brings together fans and guests from Japanese and US anime manga industries. Activities focus on gaming, cinema, music, panels, workshops and more. Anime Central takes place in Rosemont at the Hyatt Regency.
DucKon - June 2014 - DucKon is a family-friendly science fiction and fantasy convention supporting the Golden Duck Awards which honor excellence in children's science fiction literature. They have an impressive slate of authors and artists. DucKon is held at the Westin Chicago North Shore in Wheeling.
Flashback Weekend -August 2014 - This annual horror convention always offers a great slate of guests from your favorite horror movies. The con also has an awesome Dealer's Room where you can find all the best horror merch, collectibles, art, DVD's, toys, masks, t-shirts, jewelry and more. This isn't just for horror fans though - they offer plenty for sci fi and fantasy enthusiasts as well.
Wizard World - August 2014 - Wizard World is held in Rosemont and is an excellent opportunity to meet your favorite stars TV, Movies, Comics, and even wrestling. Wizard World offers photo ops and autographs from these stars and they also have a wide variety of vendors.
Chicago TARDIS -November 2014-This is the premiere event for Doctor Who fans in the Midwest. With the explosion of the Doctor's popularity, this con has grown in scope since its founding in 2000. The event is held at the Westin Yorktown Center in Lombard.
WindyCon - November 2014 - WindyCon is a local science fiction and fantasy literature convention held in Lombard. This year's themes is Grimm Tales and has authors, editors and custume experts as guests.
WalkerStalkercon - as highlighted in our earlier entry, WalkerStalkercon focuses on The television show, The Walking Dead. It is organized by the hosts of a podcast devoted to TWD, The WalkerStalkers. This year the event was held at Rosemont in and they brought in impressive guests from The Walking Dead, as well as the television shows, Arrow, Lost and Game of Thrones. WalkerStalkercon plans to return to Rosemont in April 2015.
